Taco Seasoning

Of all the seasonings I make on a regular basis – none of them get used as much as my homemade taco seasoning, okay my garam masala too. A pantry staple, homemade taco seasoning is my go-to jar I reach for a speedy midweek meal. With a couple a tablespoons of this beauty, I can whip up a meal in literally minutes. Once you have the ingredients of which most are pantry staples you could whip up this mixture in minutes. Unlike the store bought taco seasoning that have fillers, anti-caking agents, excessive salt and most likely bland. This recipe is based on your personal preferences, if you LOVE chipotle, add a bit more chipotle powder! Want to garlicky, add some extra garlic. Or if you’re making it for picky eaters, dial down the amount. Best of all, it’s made with ingredients you know, none of those highly processed ingredients which we don’t need!

Use It On Just About Everything

I use it to season chicken(favorite), slabs of tofu, salmon, shrimps, steaks even ground meat. Massage it on firm veggies like cauliflower, sweet potatoes, onions, bell peppers then roast the veggies for a fabulously delicious dinner. Add a couple teaspoons into a pot of beans or chili or while you cook rice. I mean, the possibilities really are endless. This DIY Taco Seasoning is not only delicious but versatile to use in so many dishes. Best of all Taco night is every night with this jar handy.

Ingredients

  • Chili Powder: I love the earthy smoky flavor Ancho chili powder brings to this recipe. If you can’t find ancho powder, skip or use regular chili powder.
  • Paprika: smoked mild paprika has a wonder depth, it elevates the flavor of any protein or vegetable you rub it on.
  • Ground Cumin: herby, lemony cumin is an essential flavor maker in Mexican cuisine.
  • Garlic Powder: you could use fresh garlic, grated into the marinade or garlic powder.
  • Smoked Chipotle: nothing compares the smoky heat chipotle peppers can deliver and its ability to transform the recipe to a whole new level. Again you could either use a couple of canned chipotle peppers with adobo sauce if you’re using it right away or smoked chipotle powder for a dry rub, it’s a matter of preference.
  • Sugar: to balance the flavor, love to use coconut sugar for its natural caramel flavor.
  • Dried Oregano: use Mexican oregano preferably, or regular works too.
  • Sea Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Olive oil: mix the seasoning with olive oil and use as a rub and marinate.

How to Use Your Homemade Taco Seasoning

Depending on the quantity of protein or veggies you’re making, mix the dry seasoning with olive oil. About 11/2 tablespoons for 2 lbs of protein. Rub and massage the mixture all over your prepared chicken or protein of your choice. Leave it to marinate, grill, roast or cook as needed and enjoy.
