Creamy Tahini Smoothie with Muddled Strawberries

This creamy, fruity and beautiful tahini smoothie will knock your socks off. It takes only need 5 minutes and a few simple ingredients to make with the nostalgic taste. The strawberry layered with creamy tahini smoothie is vegan, sugar free (only sweetened with fruit) and filled with healthy fats, protein and fiber for the perfect breakfast or snack.

Ingredients for Muddled Strawberry Smoothie

  • Frozen or fresh strawberries: When in season recommend fresh strawberries when they’re at their peak ripeness and then freezing them for the best flavor, if not frozen strawberries will work just fine.
  • Frozen banana: I always keep sliced frozen banana for smoothies, bowls, ice cream base. Once blended it turns into incredibly creamy whipped cream, soft serve like texture making it an excellent alternative to ice cream. Not to mention over ripened bananas are naturally very sweet.
  • Oranges: for some sweetness and citrus goodness.
  • Tahini: packed with healthy fats, fiber, vitamins and its wonderful flavor, tahini is my favorite base for smoothies.
  • Milk: I like to use unsweetened almond milk in this smoothie recipe, use any milk you’d like.
  • Optional add ins: ground flax, and/or chia/hemp seeds are an excellent source of for another boost of healthy fats, fiber and omega-3s. See next for more options.

Nutritional Boosters

  • Ground Flaxseeds: this is one of my favorite nutritional booster for oatmeals, smoothies etc. These little seeds of miracle provide excellent soluble and insoluble fiber, minerals and omega 3 fats. Usually, a tablespoon is plenty for smoothies. If using chia you may need to consume the smoothie right away to prevent it getting too thick.
  • Oats: to add a little heft to your smoothie, feel free to add up to ¼ cup rolled oats. Do not use steel cut oats as they will not blend well.
  • Protein: For more protein to the smoothie add ½ cup of greek yogurt or 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder.

Note: you’ll need to adjust the milk/liquid if you add the ingredients mentioned. Add a little liquid at a time and blend the smoothie until you have a creamy texture.

More Flavor Ideas?

It goes without saying you can swap the strawberries for frozen raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, mixed berries or pitted cherries. All options are fabulous.

Prep Time 5 minutes mins
Course Breakfast, Dessert
Servings 2

Ingredients

  • 2 cups almond or other milks of your choice light preferred
  • 2 small oranges
  • 1 medium frozen banana presliced and frozen** see notes
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries defrost slightly if frozen
  • 2 tbsp tahini runny or stirred well
  • 1 tbsp ground flax/ chia/ hemp seeds or protein powder OPTIONAL
  • pinch of cinnamon optional
  • toasted sesame seeds for topping optional

Instructions

  • Chop the oranges, banana, along with tahini and milk. Blend until smooth nd creamy.
  • Divide the strawberries into 2 glasses. Muddle them with a (muddler or back of a spoon) slightly so they are crushed and release some juice.
  • Pour the smoothie equally in the glasses. Enjoy with a sprinkling of ground cinnamon if you like it.

Notes

Ripen banana for at least 2 days so their sweetness develops. Black spots on the skins are a good indicator of ripeness. Slice the banana and freeze in freezer bag. Use in smoothies or nice creams as a base.
